Tapping Networks

Hey folks,

Let's consider this post the *official* place to add you thoughts on how your team can best leverage the power of social networks: computer, personal, mobile, whatever.

One post per team is all that's needed: just work your way through tonite's points (bullets will do just fine) and lay out some ideas of how these theories can be applied to your world-changing idea.

Good luck!

1) trust based vs friendship based social networking -

website is trust-based but marketing leans towards viral/friendship-based social network

2) people can only manage 150 relationships (6 degrees of separation) -

viewer forum will spur more opportunities for players (viewer will tell so and so, and it will spread)

3) the strength of weak ties -

the players don't know each other. they bring different traits to the table, therefore their similarities and differences will make the process more interesting.

4) the medium is the message. (hot vs cool) -

more cool than hot. the players participate and the viewers can watch the action but they also have a chance to participate via the forums.

The strength of weak ties - There are no site biases on placing personal opinions. This will allow for anyone to provide their feedback and can increase the potential audience.

Dunbar's Number 150 - If the concept is strong enough with its audience, each person will talk about it amongst the people they interact with.

Social Networking : online - The basic model this network uses is is definitely a friendship over trust type to create partnerships between people of the same cause.

Social Networking : applications - Online website bulletin board allows friending by the vote system; when someone backs a similar viewpoint up, but also caters to opposing viewpoints. This can target larger demographics.
Publications in newspapers are also a good tool to attract a different crowd. It usually has an activity with the business class and people who take active interest in learning about the world around them. We could use this to circulate movement or embed thought on the topic of animal cruelty.

Significance - Viral marketing : The cause will polarize people and can be used to market publicity (therefore, more activity). If there is an agreement it can attract a few people to strengthen the point but if there is an argument there is bound to be more speculation on the subject.
